The Buckeye is the state tree of Ohio. The nut that comes off the tree is in a spiky shell. When it cracks open, it resembles these cookies. There was a buckeye tree we always climbed as kids in my friends backyard, so I have fond memories of this nut. The cookie is WAY better though! If you have never made it, you need to immediately.
Cream together one stick of butter, one and a half cups of creamy peanut butter, and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Slowly add one pound of powdered sugar. When it is all mixed, roll the peanut butter mixture into balls, about 1 to 2 inches in size. You can really make them as big or small as you like. I prefer to keep them small so there is a good peanut butter to chocolate ratio. Put them into the freezer so they can get nice and hard. Next, melt some milk chocolate in a double boiler. Dip the peanut butter balls in the chocolate using a toothpick. Set them down on wax paper to cool and harden. You can store these in the freezer in an airtight container for a few weeks. If they last that long!
Posted these last year, but they are definitely worth posting again! Enjoy!!
On the end of a piece of yarn, wrap some tape tightly to make it easier to thread. Tie a big knot on the opposite end of the yarn. String cheerios on until the string is full. Hang it from your nearest tree. The cheerios are bird food and then they can use the yarn in their nest! This is a great fine motor activity and perfect for earth day, a unit on birds, or animals in winter.
1st Amendment Foldable
I am taking a summer class and we had to make a foldable for social studies. (This is 4th grade in Ohio). Just thought I would share it.
Graphing ‘O’ the Green
Use a die cut machine to cut out shamrocks. Enough for each student to have a few. Put “green” statements on the bottom. If they agree, they write their name on the shamrock and post it above the statement. For example, My favorite color is green. I like to eat green beans. and so on.
Display picture/word for high frequency seasonal words for writing.
S’mores Descriptive Words
Used in math center during butterfly unit.
Made with circle stickers and index cards.
Created a recording sheet based on my kids’ levels.
Fruit Loops Rainbow Sorting
Begin with a labeled worksheet of a rainbow. Have students sort fruit loops onto the correct color.
Green Things Web for St. Patrick’s Day
Brainstorm ideas as a group after read aloud.
Students who were able, copy onto individual graphic organizer.
As a reward for good behavior last month, I decorated the desks of students who made their goal. A dollar store balloon, homemade award printed on cardstock, and some crepe paper streamers. It made their desk a little special for the day.
